Miguel Ortega-Vazquez is an Area Manager in Transmission Operations and Planning at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and an Affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Washington (UW). His work focuses on power system operation and planning under uncertainty, with emphasis on reliability, resilience, probabilistic methods, reserve determination, forecasting, and decision-support tools for modern electric grids.

Miguel Ortega-Vazquez, (S’97–M’06–SM’14), received the Electrical Engineering degree from the Instituto Tecnológico de Morelia, Mexico, in 1999, the M.Sc. degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Mexico, in 2001, and the Ph.D. degree from The University of Manchester, United Kingdom, in 2006, all with an emphasis in power systems.
He was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Manchester, until 2010, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Energy and Environment at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, until 2011. In 2012, he joined the University of Washington, Seattle, as a Research Assistant Professor, and in 2013 as an Assistant Professor. He is currently an Affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Washington.
In 2017, he joined the Grid Operations and Planning group at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), where he is currently an Area Manager in Transmission Operations and Planning.
Dr. Ortega-Vazquez’s research interests focus on the development and application of methods to support the efficient, secure, reliable, resilient, and sustainable operation and planning of electric power systems.

Miguel Ortega-Vázquez es Gerente de Área en Operación y Planificación de Transmisión en el Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) y Profesor Asociado Afiliado en la Universidad de Washington (UW). Su trabajo se centra en la operación y planificación de sistemas eléctricos bajo incertidumbre, con énfasis en confiabilidad, resiliencia, métodos probabilísticos, determinación de reservas, pronóstico y herramientas de apoyo a la toma de decisiones para redes eléctricas modernas.

Miguel Ortega-Vázquez, (S’97–M’06–SM’14), recibió el título de Ingeniero Eléctrico del Instituto Tecnológico de Morelia, México, en 1999, el grado de M.Sc. de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, México, en 2001, y el grado de Ph.D. de The University of Manchester, Reino Unido, en 2006, todos con énfasis en sistemas eléctricos de potencia.
Fue investigador posdoctoral en la Escuela de Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica de The University of Manchester hasta 2010, y Profesor Asistente en el Departamento de Energía y Medio Ambiente de Chalmers University of Technology, Gotemburgo, Suecia, hasta 2011. En 2012 se incorporó a la Universidad de Washington, Seattle, como Profesor Asistente de Investigación, y en 2013 como Profesor Asistente. Actualmente es Profesor Asociado Afiliado en la Universidad de Washington.
En 2017 se incorporó al grupo de Planificación y Operación de Redes del Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), donde actualmente es Gerente de Área en Operación y Planificación de Transmisión.
